The story of Rocinha is inseparable from Brazil’s complex history. After the abolition of slavery in 1888, freed Black Brazilians were displaced to the city’s outskirts, forming the first communities known as “favelas.” Over the decades, economic migration from rural Brazil further shaped these neighborhoods, bringing a diverse mix of people to cities like Rio. Rocinha, now home to over 100,000 residents, stands as a testament to resilience, ingenuity, and community spirit.
The Typical Brazilian food

Brazilian cuisine bursts with influences from Portugal, African slaves, indigenous cultures, and other European, South American, and Asian countries. Following the abolition of slavery in 1888, Brazil invited Europeans and Japanese immigrants to work on coffee plantations across the country. From the northern Amazon to the southern pampas, you’ll encounter a wide range of Brazilian dishes reflecting this rich, multicultural heritage.

Reviews from our customers
This is an excellent tour. You learn a lot about the city and how people have taken it into their own hands to build a life. A favela tour is far from “let’s go look at poor people”, as some on social media suggest. The guide is very knowledgeable and speaks excellent English. Wear good shoes since the roads and stairs are steep.

This was awesome to be in a place like that. We were very secure by walking from the top to the bottom of the favela with our guide. Thank you very much for a great tour.

Didn’t really know what to expect and was a bit apprehensive, but what a surprise, It was excellent, a real eye opener and our guide Edson was superb, very informative, knowledgeable and very helpful. He was born in the Favela so knew all the little nooks and crannies and knew all the kids and the locals. This is a tour I would highly recommend to anyone, although if you have difficulty walking & going down steep steps you may struggle.
